States like Nevada, Arizona and Hawaii — for example — might not be the best places to invest in solar, despite the sunny weather. In Nevada and Arizona, public utilities have enacted regulations that have driven up the cost for homeowners taking advantage of net-metering, which is when a home sells its excess solar power back to the utility companies. And Hawaii's problem is that solar-paneled homes have sold so much surplus power back to the grid that utilities have become overwhelmed. On the other hand, if you live in states like California or Rhode Island, solar could be a good investment. Here's Bill Griffin, president and COO of startup Koolbridge Solar Inc.: "The conversation in Rhode Island is a very interesting one because they're using this net-metering concept, but they're guaranteeing price points and paybacks to the end user if they're the ones generating the solar energy." And California has a history of being pretty pro-renewable energy, though even energy-savvy states have run into issues with power grids. "We're using a structure that's already in place. How Do Tariff Rates Work For Solar Energy?

A Tariff Rate is the price you are paid by your electricity provider for selling your energy back to the grid. In the past tariff rates have ranged anywhere from well, nothing through to 60c depending on the market conditions. In real terms most people use their power at night and sell most of the power their solar system produces during the day back to the grid. Also in most cases you'll receive a lower tariff rate for what you sell back to the energy providers than what you pay to buy electricity from them. As most people never buy a system that is designed to eliminate your bill the calculation usually works something like this: You produce 15 kws during the day with your solar system and sell it back to your energy provider for 25 cents a kw but then at night you may use 30 kws which is costing you 31 cents a kw so there is a gap between your financial benefit for having the solar system and what your real usage is in the home. 15 kws x 0.25 cents = $2.50 (Day-time, selling your energy) 30 kws x 0.31 cents = $9.30 (Night-time, buying your energy) The only way to get over this is to get a system that eliminates your bill. You need to send more energy back to the provider during the day than what you're using at night. Think about it like debits and credits in a bank. If you credit your bank account with $100 and then you debit your account for $80 you have got a surplus of $20 still available in the account. In simple terms this is what you need your solar system to do for you. Now let's talk about how companies can manipulate the results of your solar returns by playing games with the tariff rates. Let's say there is a special deal going on the market for a 2kw system. One company is offering an above market special rate of a 60c tariff rate while another is offering the going market price of only 25c. Now let's assume your system produces 10 kws a day. At 60c a kw the first company will be producing $6 a day return for you on your bill while the second is only producing $2.50. 2 kw solar system: 2 kws @ 0.25 cents = $2.50 2 kws @ 0.60 cents = $6.00 Looking at the two figures it's easy to see which is producing the highest return and you can understand how most people would make the decision to go with the company offering a 60c tariff rate. So is this all there is to consider? Firstly understand that the tariff rate alone is just one small part of your overall package. It does not change the fundamental principle of buying solar which is to get a system to eliminate your bill. The number one mistake people make when they buy solar is they don't get a system that is big enough. If your household usage is 30kws a day then it doesn't matter if your tariff rate is 25c or 60c a 2kw solar system that produces 10kws a day for you is still not bigger enough to cover your usage and you're likely to still have an electricity bill after buying your solar system. (2 kw system will only very produce 10 kws a day on average. In other words it won't cover your 30 kw a day usage.) The other consideration is about the price for the solar system itself. Typically whenever you find a tariff rate that is substantially above going market rates you'll find a price for that solar system that is higher as well. Either that or you getting lower quality stock -- the higher tariff rate has to be paid for somewhere. Think about it this way -- have you ever seen those television ads about real estate investments where the sales pitch goes something like this: "If you buy this investment property now you'll have guaranteed rental returns for the next 3 years!" Now who do you think is paying for this 'rental guarantee'? Usually the purchaser pays $10,000-$20,000 more for the property in the purchase price to cover the cost of the 'rental guarantee'. That's another thing -- usually these higher tariff rates are only for a limited time anyway and then you fall back to current market rates regardless. Now there's nothing wrong with getting a higher tariff rate if you can get it but it's not the most important consideration in buying solar and certainly shouldn't be the deciding factor. If you get a system that is the right size for your usage (and the right quality) then it doesn't matter too much what the tariff rate is because you will be depositing more credits into the bank than what you're withdrawing or debiting from the account - in other words you'll be left with no bill at all At the end of the day why would you pay money for a solar system and still be left with an electricity bill to pay for as well?
